My name is Kathryn, and I am a
25 26 year old graduate student who spends her waking hours thinking about math, food, running, tv shows, books, friends, family, and kittehs. Since I’ve dedicated this blog mostly to running, I’ve created a separate page for my running story; here I elaborate on the non-running aspects of my life.
I’m in year
3 4 of ? of a Ph.D. program in math. I do pure math, and specfiically low-dimensional topology (not to be confused with topography or typology!), which means I do it without having applications as my main motivation. Translation: my math is like art. It’s beautiful and more often than not, useless, apart from being a never-ending source of ways to exercise a brain. Don’t get me wrong, I’d be as excited as the next guy to discover that what I study is useful, but pure math has a very different feel than applied math and all I can say is that I fell in love with the pure stuff. It’s very clean, and the rest of life is messy enough!
UPDATE: I just graduated with my M.A. in Mathematics! Yay! Slowly moving into ABD (all but dissertation) territory.
Food. I rarely meet a food I dislike, but favorites include sourdough baguettes, cheese, fruit (the specific type depends on the season), and dark chocolate. I literally eat almost all of these things on a daily basis. I will occasionally post recipes if they are really stellar and I either (a) get permission from the recipe source to use its photo or (b) I manage to actually take a picture of the food that doesn’t look like slightly composed barf. A food stylist I am not, so (b) is a rarity. As a sidenote, I am always looking for delicious recipes both of the healthy and comfort varieties, so please share anything that knocks your socks off.
Currently I watch New Girl, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Girls, and Chopped. A few shows I have already watched and either finished or given up on are The Walking Dead, Dexter, Mad Men, and House. This summer, I plan to watch Homeland, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, How I Met Your Mother, and The Office.
Within the past year I’ve read The Help, The Hunger Games trilogy, The Robber Bride, Atonement, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Hobbit, Snow Falling on Cedars, Unaccustomed Earth, World War Z, Empire of the Summer Moon, and The Five Love Languages. As of 3/10/13, I am reading The Good Earth. My favorite book of all time is One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
My friends and family are extremely precious to me, as are my two kittehs, Nora and Toast. The people (and animals!) in my life are supportive and loving and fun, and I am beyond blessed in this realm. In this blog I will probably mention my running buddies more than anyone else, only because this is a running-centric blog. Also, I want to respect the privacy of my friends and family members that do not wish to have their lives displayed on the internet, so the detail given about non-running aspects of my life will be minimal. At least for now :). I will say though that my two cat monsters have given me complete freedom to post their pictures, but I’m going to be careful about that since cats (not Kats) tend to go viral. I don’t want them stealing my thunder.
I hope you enjoy my blog! Feel free to contact me at: email@example.com.
